Sofonisba Anguissola
and Lavinia Fontana
To celebrate its 200th birthday the Prado in Madrid mounted an exhibition of
the work of two prodigious female painters from the 16th century. Widely
celebrated in their lifetimes, Sofonisba Anguissola and Lavinia Fontana were
rudely forgotten after their deaths. Comparison of the work of these two
extraordinary women reveals much about the possible career paths for
women in their day. It also reveals the innate qualities that make one artist
more compelling for us today. You will love Sofonisba and Lavinia.
Barbara Tomlinson, Ph.D. is an Art Historian who lectures frequently on a
broad range of art topics. She has been lecturing at the JCC for
