In 1733 Joseph Oppenheimer became the 'court Jew' of Carl Alexander, the duke of the German state of Wurttemberg. When Alexander died unexpectedly, Oppenheimer was arrested, put on trial, and condemned to death for unspecified 'misdeeds."
