"The Triangle Shirtwaist Fire: Out of Tragedy Comes Social Justice"
On the first day of spring in 1911, a terrible fire broke out in Manhattan's Garment District. When it ended, half an hour later, 146 workers, mostly young immigrant Jewish women, were dead. This horror capped years of worker protests against intolerable conditions and propelled a powerful coalition of New Yorkers to enact factory safety legislation that would become a model for the nation. Presented by Professor Pamela Nadell holder of the Patrick Clendenen Chair in Women's and Gender History at American University.
