Rabbi Mordecai Schwartz leads this six session class. Rabbinic tradition has generally divided observance of Shabbat into two major categories: melakhah and shevut, the prohibition on labor and the obligation to rest. These two categories will be explored, arguing that refraining from work is a necessary element of Shabbat, but not a sufficient one. We will ask what it means to perform a positive act by resting. Finally, we will ask how our understanding of these two categories should inform our contemporary observance of Shabbat.
