Making a Difference for Ukraine's Jews Caught in Russian Conflict

Federation's partners on the ground, such as the Joint Distribution Committee (JDC), Jewish Agency for Israel (JAFI), World ORT, United Hatzalah -- and in turn, when they have their own networks of partners, such as Chabad -- are helping people in Ukraine, refugees to places like Poland and Romania, and people looking to make Aliya.

The stories are of:

  • the homebound, bedridden or disabled, whose aid workers have been sleeping over in these clients' homes to provide aid despite curfews, lack of transportation, or shelling at unexpected times…
  • a woman whose mother passed away in their apartment, who couldn't get the services needed, let alone a Jewish burial...
  • the mother in Jerusalem who couldn't reach her teenage son visitng a relative in Odessa, and the photo sent round the world that enabled JDC workers to locate him at a crowded bus station and transport him across three countries to get him on a plane back to Israel...
  • people who fled their homes with nothing…

Our help involves:

  • food, clothing, shelter, medicine, psychological support, and communications with satellite phones and emergency hotlines… for untold thousands of people;
  • transporting people across borders -- by the busload -- and assisting others crossing on their own;
  • expediting VISAs for making Aliya;

In one case, an aid worker looking to care for refugees in transit with no place to sleep, received a call saying, "500 rooms are available but only if you can pay for the rent immediately." She was able to pay for the rent immediately.

These partners tell us none of this would be possible without Federation support.

Thank you to our donors for helping save lives.
